Skilled manpower is essential to advance the current state of the Singapore PE industry to one with high competency and knowledge-based manufacturing of high value products. SIMTech offers manpower training through a two-prong method of basic principles that relate the trainee’s academic training to practice and hands-on work on the shop floor or the COI laboratory.
Training on Machine Operation, CAD/CAM and Simulation Tools
Many companies spent substantial amount of in-house resources on machine operator training. These are usually done on-the-job, but nevertheless take up a great portion of valuable time from the company’s experienced employees and machine utilisation. Training of basic machine centre operation through to in-depth machining knowhow are available at Singapore Precision Engineering & Tooling Association (SPETA) and/or SIMTech. Other training in injection moulding, CAD/CAM, and use of software for process simulation such as mould flow and metal forming analysis are also available. Companies are welcome to discuss with the COI on training needs.
Specialist Skill Training
SIMTech organises specialist skills training courses and workshops aimed at providing shop-floor production personnel with in-depth technical knowhow. Such courses cover complete and comprehensive knowhow of the process based essentially on hands-on training on the shop-floor. The eventual outcome is to train the staff to attain specialist skill of Grade 2 or 3 out of five grades. One such course being formulated is Tool Manufacturing Engineer. Because of the in-depth and comprehensive nature of the course, it is a long term on-the-job training commitment of the trainees and its employers (if any). A part-time course for a duration of three years whereby hands-on training is carried out in SIMTech COI laboratory which offers a comprehensive range of machines and analytical equipment. In order that the trainees would not be detached completely from their employment, many of the case studies could be real-life work of the employers’ production.
Seminars and Workshops
SIMTech offers many seminars, workshops and roundtable discussions based on specific topics. Such events usually last for half a day to a couple of days. These seminars are either free-of-charge or a small token fee might be chargeable. More extensive courses called Technology Infusion Program (TIP) whereby about 18 hours of lectures and laboratory hands-on work are also given from time-to-time. Such courses aims to provide greater technology in-depth and yet easily understandable and adaptable knowhow relevant to the manufacturing shopfloor.
