Non-Slip Coating

Technology Description
Non-slip Coating is a unique technique based on sol-gel technology to enhance the safety of glass flooring without modifying the transparency or clarity of glass.

Specifications & Features
The Non-slip Coating can increase the friction between shoe sole material and glass flooring to prevent slipping when the floor is wet. The coating enables the use of glass flooring in interior design projects and in novel architectural concepts without compromising safety. Main coating properties and specifications are listed in table.

Applications & Markets
Main application areas are architectural developments and interior design projects among others. Other applications are found in the environment and chemicals sectors.

Advantages
The benefit of using the coating is two-fold: It opens new markets in flooring applications for glass manufacturers and contributes to the safe implementation of glass flooring in novel architectural or interior design projects.

Conventional approaches to reduce slipperiness such as protruding particles, grooves, surface patterns or frits, tend to make the glass opaque and less desirable from an aesthetic point of view. Non-slip Coating however, does not obliterate the clarity of the glass. In fact, it is difficult to discern the presence of coating by visual observation.

In addition, the Non-slip Coating is able to increase the friction of glass surface against shoe-sole materials to safe levels even when it is tested while flooded with pure water. Wet bare glass has unsafe levels of static coefficient of friction below 0.3 while coated glass has static coefficient of friction near 0.8 when it is wet; well above the frequently specified minimum of 0.5 required for safety.
